Graphic design of the logos of the Hana Hou missions in Hawaii.
The Hana Hou Mission took place at the HI-SEAS base on Mauna Loa Volcano in February 2023. The missions are field simulations with researchers and ground-based astronauts. The official logos were used on the astronauts’ suits during the missions. As part of the mission crew, I was in charge of Outreach. I was also the official photographer to document the activities of the crew. Take a look at my shots in the photography section of this website!
The concept:
Hana Hou means “renaissance,” “to begin again” in Hawaiian. This name was chosen for the mission which took place last february on the Mauna Loa Vulcano because it was the first mission after several months of inactivity due to the volcanic eruptions of Mauna Loa. In the patch I decided to represent the silhouette of a phoenix, which among different cultures is a symbol of rebirth and new start. Also, the phoenix is reborn from the ashes, and it seemed like a good image given the recent lava eruptions of Mauna Loa. So, here are the various elements represented in the patch: the phoenix, the volcano, and in the background Mars. In the lower right corner I have included a schematic representation of the habitat, to put it in context. Several color variations were studied to then select the final one with the crew.
