An immersive, interactive and multi-sensorial cocoon for astronauts onboard the ISS

Kokono is one of two concepts developed during Space4Inspiraction, the course held at Politecnico di Milano by professors A. Dominoni and B. Quaquaro with the support of ESA (European Space Agency). Technogym was partner of the project. The company is an excellence in the sports equipment sector. The project was developed in a team of six students.
The vision was to provide a private and fully immersive, interactive and multi-sensorial cocoon for astronauts, a place where they could find peace and relax, detaching themselves from the stressful conditions of life onboard the International Space Station. Kokono is an exercise and mindfulness machine for astronauts designed to countermeasure conditions such as muscle atrophy. The machine takes as references the disciplines of reformer pilates, yoga breathing and proprioception techniques. It is designed to perform four different functions: Pilates, Balance, Breathe and Leisure.
The main structure is composed of an inflatable bubble, which creates an immersive habitat for the astronaut who gets inside. Embedded sensors and sound-insulating system assure high level of performances during the practice inside it. From the outside the shell also provides light in the cycle of the circadian rhythm. The bubble is designed to fit the size of a rack (architectural module of the ISS) and can be stored inside it when not in use.

The inside of the bubble is where the magic happens. There, astronauts can perform different reformer pilates exercises thanks to a reformer mat and a system of springs and handles adapted to the extreme conditions of zero gravity. An adjustable and inflatable belt and vest have been designed to secure the astronauts in microgravity conditions.
Kokono also features a MR (multi-reality) projector connected to kinetic motion tracking sensors, which supports the astronauts’ interactive virtual-training activities. The interface is also linked to the controlling handles, which provide the astronaut with haptic feedback. This system also offers relaxing activities such as: watching movies, immersive nature scenes, listening to music and making video calls to friends and family on Earth.

The name “Kokono” comes from Esperanto, the international language. “Kokono” means cocoon. The choice of this term alludes both to the inner transformation that the astronauts undergo using the machine and to the intimate shape of the bubble. The choice of Esperanto is to underline how Space – with its extreme conditions and challenges – creates bonds between human beings that lead us to overcome the borders we have on Earth.
